I had the same problem with an 89-535. I tried the same thing and broke my key. I enven called AAA locksmiths (3 of them) but they cannot open it. This is what worked for me.
Find the latch for the hood. The best way is to find another car if you can and look under the hood for the exact position of the latch. You can pop open the hood by sticking something like a coat hanger in it (through the grill or near it). It is very very simple once you find the latch. Once the hood is open then just hook up jumper cable to the battery terminal and you're home free. Good luck.

The battery on my '88 735i has died and the beast is locked in the driveway. I have tried, to no avail, to unlock the doors manually (lift handle, insert key, turn). The key WILL NOT go past the point of resistance and the door remains locked. What do I do now? Please advise!

Mikey
