Tom,
You should default to Economy mode every time you turn the key on so if you put it in D you should read "E D" on the dash and if you switch to "*" (winter) what ever gear range you put the shifter in you should START in that gear like "2" or "3" and if you put the shifter in "4" the dash should say "S 4" or if you flip the switch to "S" mode it should say "S 4" Hope this helps.

My switch does not go economy mode, only winter and sport. Does anyone know if this is just a defected switch? Or could it be a problem with the transmission? How long can I keep driving in winter mode or sport mode before it damage the transmission (or does it affect the transmission at all)?
Thanks
Tom
