I finally wondered why my car would never go to "*" mode when switched. Cleaning the switch as above didn't improve the situation. When I disassembled the switch, I actually found a seed in it which was interfering with contact. My point is that disassembling the switch is actually quite simple and straight forward. If cleaning, as described by gale doesn't do the trick, go ahead and open it up.

Mine suffered from the "Pepsi Syndrome" (accumulation of drink spills on the console) & reached a point where more than 50% of the time when started in the morning, it went straight to "M" mode. I wouldn't start in the default "ED" mode & I couldn't switch it back into "E" mode. I sprayed some contact cleaner in the switch & worked it back & forth rapidly a few dozen times & now it works fine.
