I did the following on the recommendation of fellow board member Kevin and it seems to have cured the clunking issue.

1. Drain the fluid from the transmission pan (about four quarts)
2. Add three quarts of your favourite synthetic transmission fluid (Mobil 1) plus one quart of Trans X transmission cleaner.
3. Drive the car for 1000 miles then repeat steps 1 and 2 above.
4. Repeat step 3 for a total of 10 fluid changes.
5. On change 10, replace the transmission filter.

After 2 or 3 changes, you will notice that the transmission shifts are significantly smoother. I think that the cause of the problem is a partially restricted fluid passage or a sticking valve. The Trans X fluid seems to loosen up the restriction and free up the sticky valve.

Regards

Alex

My '89 735i does the same thing on the 2-3 shift but the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts are smooth. It doesn't always do it and it's frustrating. Anybody have a clue about this?

Thanks.

My 88 735i has a life long recurring trans prob. Rather than shifting smoothly, the car shifts with a clunk. This coincides with the gas mileage gauge failing. i.e. the needle wanders. It behaves exactly like a vacuum leak but I'm told that this is an electronic issue. The prob.
comes and goes sometimes in the same day. Does anyone know what part is failing and how I might prevent it from failing in the future?
