These cars don't have timing belts, so that not need be a concern. And I think that no one on this board has ever reported a broken timing chain.

It sounds like you are getting good price. It might be also worth doing a carfax check on the VIN to see if there is a history of odometer tampering or salvage reconstruction or collision for the car.

Be sure to check the function of all the electrical accessories, seats, sunroof, and windows. 735's are known for oil pan gasket leaks. Brakes can be very expensive on these cars. Find out when they were last done so you can know when you will be looking at the next job. The exhaust system can get some rattles as the shield for the catalytic converter comes un-welded. Maybe thats what you hear. If so thats pretty harmless. Check for taughteness and rattles in the front end and steering components like tie rod ends, sway bar bushings, etc. and popping noises in the rack and pinion, especially when its cold. Drive the car up to highway speed (+ some) and look for any unusual vibrations that could signify front end work or the center bearing on the driveshaft needing replaced (Another common problem). Find out when the timing belt was last replaced. It should be done as often as every 60K or so to prevent unwanted belt breakage and the mechanical disaters that follow. At this mileage you might also want to start to be wary of head gasket leaks (another common problem for the 735's) These cars also have liquid filled motor and transmission mounts that can leak and often need replaced in an older car.

We all share your interest in this automobile. I have one concern about you being 16 though. (I have a 17 Y/o son myself) In that these cars are very finely made machines and are likewise very expensive to maintain and repair. Even the parts are much more expensive than say your typial Camaro or Mustang and a good German car mechanic is harder to find and definitely more expensive than typical. ( I am assuming you are from the USA)I don't know your financial means, but when I was 16, I could hardly afford to put gas in the tank, much less perform regular propylactic maintenence on a top of the line German Automobile! Good Luck and make your decision with your head.. not your heart.. And if you end up with your dream car welcome to the club! Just make sure its a sweet dream and not a nightmare for you in the long run!

Im thinking of purchasing a 1991 735iL from a private party. I test drove the car, and everything is in working order except for a rattling noise when the car is idle. I have always wanted an E32 BMW, (I am 16, i have wanted this car since i was 10) and it is a deal i cannot resist, as it has 108000 miles and he is taking my deal of $5600 for it. I am getting this noise checked out by a German car mechanic i know, and i was wondering if there are any pointers, or anything else i should have checked before i buy it? THANKS. THIS FORUM IS THE BEST, I ALWAYS READ STUFF HERE!
