Happy New Year. The typical problems with early BMW V8s affected the engine’s ability to idle. As the problem worsens the engines idle becomes very rough, and ultimately the engine will not idle at all. From everything I have read, and that includes all of the typical references given on this forum, even engines that will not idle, will pull strongly without vibration once under way. As a matter of fact they exhibit very little, if any, loss of power.
Possibly the vibration you are experiencing is drive train related. I would have the transmission mounts, drive shaft and rear differential mounts checked. For that matter I would have the entire car thoroughly inspected by a very knowledgeable BMW tech before purchasing it. Search the archives for typical problems to see what you will be getting in to. Believe me, some repairs such as suspension and exhaust items are very straightforward. They aren’t necessarily easy, but you can see what you are doing and trying to accomplish. Others that involve working on and around that engine can really tax your patience, not to mention your wallet.
Contact me if you would like more information.
Hope this helps.

I am considering buying a "93 740I. It runs and looks great except it shakes on acceration. It has new tires and is not a tire or wheel alignment problem. The car does not shake when put in nuetral when moving, only during acceleration. Also does anyone have read on this 8 cyl engine. It has 95K miles on it and purrs. What is the history and expectations. Thanks!
