1986 535i no forward gears has reverse (archive)

Hi all, my first post, i owned a 86 535i for few years, i rebuilt engine, drove the car daily like i just stole it, car never missed a beat, strong shifts no slipping, sold car to co-worker he drove car (drove it easy-no licence)for a few weeks and was at lunch and backed up shifted from reverse to drive and made funny noise, from that point on it slipped real bad in forward and reverse was tight, after driving about a mile it wouldnt go at all in drive, tried manual 1,2,3 sounds like it shifts in tranny but no go, please help with any ideas on what to look at first, i now own car again, TJ
