1. Better freeze and boil over protection than plain water.
2. Corrosion inhibitors.
3. There are different kinds of metal in contact with the coolant. Aluminum, Iron, Steel, Copper, who knows what else. There is also voltage on the block and therefore in the coolant. This can cause galvanic corrosion, which will eat up the least noble metal, in this case, aluminum. BMW coolant is designed for use in aluminum engines, Brand X (or P) isn't. I've seen lots of Hondas with aluminum blocks that had Brand X coolant in them, all with rusted out freeze plugs. Aluminum and Brand X don't play well.
Hi all,
A friend has a 90 735i, IN which he doesn't use any coolant!!!!, he says use Coolant only for 3 months in the fall, and drain in late winter and the next 9 Month month with only water!!!!.
I told him he should not do this, since I have always use the BMW coolant IN MY 735I-88!!. He says it is nonesense, he uses standard cheap antifreeze coolant. His car really runs very nice.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOU THIS??
