On the driver's side, remove the headlight grille. Right next to the center grille area, you will see a small, rectangular box with a small, shiny metal switch -- place a screwdriver under this switch and turn to unlatch the hood. Once the hood is open, you can get a jumper to the hot post by the firewall.

I have drilled a small (3mm) hole in the grille to grant me access anytime I need it. On my pop's '88 750, there was a small hole in the grille (I have an '88 735i five-speed), but this may have been from a previous owner.

This is a rather mysterious hood latch release, as most techs don't seem to know about this. Methinks the Black Forest Elves built themselves a back door.
