I recently had to service the steering wheel and instrument cluster, requiring disconnecting the orange air bag plug. Now my SRS light, not surprisingly, is flashing, indicating I need a reset.
I've been looking over both the BMW factory manual and Bentley SRS wiring diagrams and have some questions about how the SRS diagnostic link actually can work. Pins 15 and 20 come from the SRS diagnostic module, and lead to a 20 pin access plug (called the "Diagnostic Link"), which I assume is the plug on top of the engine to which the Service Indicators are also reset (is this correct?). My problem is that the wiring diagram shows that almost all other control components also are connected to pins 15 and 20 (via parallel wiring using the same color wires), including the HVAC, general module, seat memory, cluster, etc. So, can anyone explain how a SRS reset device could discriminate between all of these items when they use the same pins?
Also, are pins 15 and 20 the logical route for reading out the SRS faults and resetting its diagnostic module? I'd appreciate any insights members might have. I can't believe there isn't some way to properly design a breadboard setup capable of both read out and resetting the SRS. It would be a great find, as there is no info in the archives as to a successful solution thus far. Bob H.
