Fuel Gauge Not Working (archive)

Hello,
My fuel gauge stays at the halfway point until the gas gets to that point, even after filling it up. When it gets to that point on the gauge everything works as normal, except for the low fuel light. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem or where I should start looking first? It is on an 89 750il.
