The early sender was a float going up & down in a cylinder, shorting out two resistance wires either further up or down their lengths as the float rose or fell - the "low fuel" light was a discrete contact at the bottom.

The float rides a central metal rod... I'd guess yours has either a seized float or a broken wire???... something stopping it at about that halfway mark. The sender is attached to the underside of the tank access plate - look in the boot, with the carpet off, and you'll see the coverplate above the access plate on the floor. You will have some complications with the 750 with two pumps in the tank wired to the plate...

Maybe you can check the archives too for more info...?

Hello,
My fuel gauge stays at the halfway point until the gas gets to that point, even after filling it up. When it gets to that point on the gauge everything works as normal, except for the low fuel light. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem or where I should start looking first? It is on an 89 750il.
Thanks,
Alan
