It's "customary". Fair is somewhat subjective. He's getting you for 2 hours labor, which is at least what it would take you (and probably the junior guy that he's going to make actually do the job at his shop). That's what most every independent is going to charge you. I've not even thought of going to the stealer for this maintenance so I can't say what they would charge. It's not a difficult job, but it is time consuming and requires both patience and a good assortment of 3/8 drive socket extensions and accessories. If you already have the tools and want to spend a Saturday afternoon "getting to know" you M70 better, it's actually a good exercise to go through... you'll look at many of the top end engine components (from the outside) very closely ;-)

I have bought new plugs for my '89 750iL and was going ot change them myself (135,000). A local bimmer mechanic said that we would change them out for me for $130 in labor (2hrs) (using my plugs). Is that a respectable price?
