The stock setup comes with the shims bob is talking about. I've had to use them on most BMW brakes that I've installed in order to ensure no squeaks. Never tried the "rough it up" technique but sounds like its worth a try.

Kevin

After trying beveling the edges of the pad, using the stop squeak compound on the back, all to no avail, I got out my tin snips and cut out two backup shims out of thin galvanized sheet metal, and glued one on each pad with anti-squeak compound. This solved the problem.

I haven't tried the suggested remedy of roughing up the painted side per the last post, but certainly will in the future as it's a simple elegant solution. It moves in the same direction of the shim, in that it disrupts the transmission of high frequency vibration to the piston, pad interface. Good idea too. Bob H.
