I think there is significantly more metal in the BMW exhaust system than other cars... as far as I can tell my '88 735i w/ 190K miles is on its first system(!). The compents "seem" heavier than their counterparts.
More metal = longer time to heat up to operating temp, until then, exhaust gas vapor will condense enroute to the tailpipe... then as the car keeps running, it re-evaporates, providing a "longer" visible exhaust period.
I'm going through 0.5 quarts of oil in 4K miles, showing no froth in oil, and no coolant leakage. Engine "seems" to have original pep, but I haven't done a leakdown.
My friend's E34 525i is the same way, as was my E28 528e.

I saw some postings about this white smoke coming out of the muffler, but i couldn't get to any conclusion.
My car smokes sometimes when it is colder .. ( not OIL burning!!!) that's pure vapor. but sometimes it smokes sooo much !!! but so much, well, after a while driving it stops.
but i was just wondering if it's normal... my coolant level is stable , oil level the same. muffler .. hum, getting old, maybe time to replace it. anything to worry about ??
thank you guys !
