91 735iL Opinions on Converting LAD rear suspend (archive)

Have read some on converting rear LAD but there does not seem to be a clear consensus. Is converting effective in providing a quality suspension -- good handling, ride etc.? Any recommendations on what to install? Does Bilstein make rear shocks to replace LAD? Is this a major project or can any mechanic familiar with shocks do the job? Thanks for any advise. Newby to BMW.
