Oil Pan removal (archive)

I want to replace/repair my oil pan (lower)(what do they mean 'upper'), the Bentley book says to remove the tranny and jack up the engine? When it was on the lift it looked like it was unbolt and drop. Am I missing something? Is it steel? Weld-able? I've got a hair line crack that needs repaired. Thanks.
