If you top off all the fluids and the CHECK ENGINE light goes out and the whine stops, you can probably rest easy-- if not, you're welcome to check out my Bentley manual. But I'd still suggest getting the Popular Mechanics CD disk that covers your model. If I'd known about it before I bought the Bentley manual, I'd rather have gone that way-- the disk is only $25., and has a lot of stuff the Bentley manual does not, such as an electrical troubleshooting section, and a section with all recall info, and factory service bulletins.
With the PM disk, you can print up only what you need, and print it up again later if the pages get oily and dirty while you're working on the car.
As for your shade, I found it in the manual-- page 513-10-- but it had no diagnostic stuff. There is a caution... don't operate the up/down mechanism unless the drive mechanism is engaged, also, there's some kind of incompatibility issue when it comes to replacing the hardware.
I live in L.A.-- if you'd like to use the manual, give me a call. 323-732-0028... cellular: 323-428-3563.

I just bought a 94 740il yesterday from of all places e-bay. My first time buying a car online. I did my research and found one with an Alusil motor (only 40k miles old. When I picked up the car it had already been warmed up, Off I went 325 miles home. Today I went out for a drive and 2 things happened.
1. Check engine light was on when cold
2. Tranny whines until warmed up
Both of these problems stop after I came back out of the store and started the now warm car. This is my 8th BMW of various types and my first V-8. I love the car but seem to have a few gremlins to hunt. Any help would appreciated.
