Hard start sometimes?/Compressor (archive)

I am experiencing hard start sometimes. But it starts fine sometimes too. Maybe I need a new battery? Any comments are appreciated.

Also, when A/C switch or Circulation switch is on, the Compressor will start making a eeeeeeee noise. Hard to explain, sounds like motor goes old. Do I need a new compressor or is it repairable? Mechanic is asking a fortune for it., He said I need a drier too. Am I being rip off? Please help! Thanks!
