Yes they are rebuildable and yes you do want to replace the dryer as well no matter what the price of the compressor, if you a/c system has not been changed you should consider changing over to R134 easier in the long run, where are you located, these guys at the link have very good prices for the rebuilt compressor they are very good I had mine done last year no problems.
how much did the mechanic want to charge you? ask him what he would charge if you supply the parts??
