Your problem may not be the gearbox and motor for the sunshade. Mine had a bad control module, with the reverse symptoms. It would go down, but not up. Check the motor by connecting it directly to a battery, once you've removed the whole rear shelf. Hooking it up one way should cause the shade to extend, reversing the leads should cause it to retract. If all is fine, check that the control box is putting out positive and negative 12 volts when you hit the switch. If not, replace it. The part number is 61 35 1 382 995. It says 61 31 1 382 995 on it, but it's not listed that way in the parts catalog.

Good luck.

Steve--
If you want to try to pull the shelf out and check for damaged parts, a guy named Brian had a problem with the rear shade too, so I got in the Bentley manual and wrote down the steps for you guys to get it apart. There was a defective part in the first couple of years that they changed, and that is apparently what is causing your problem.

To fix it, you'll have to get in there and pull the part out. It doesn't look like it's a lot of work-- take the seat out, and you'll be able to see just about everything you need to see to tell what's wrong.
Read the message I posted to Brian earlier today, and order the CD from the catalog if you think it'll help. Good luck//Bill 735i

I Found a few more problems on my 94 740il

Rear shade goes up but not down, is the gearbox toast?

Is there an easy fix for this

I also need a right fog light lens if anyone has a used on let me know.

Steve
