I've been fighting this same problem on my 1989 750iL. I just returned from a 960 mile trip. The car didn't go into the "trans program" 3rd gear only mode. It only displayed the fault on the last day of my trip, after the car had been operated for a while, and then re-started. Just shutting the engine off and then re-starting made the fault go away. I recently replaced the pcv valves (one was totally inoperative) and cleaned the shifter switches (see Gale's tips).

My car's transmission works great normally. The "trans program" glitch has been very intermittent for me. It always occurs only upon starting up the car. It's never happened while driving.

The tranny fluid is not burnt; and, appears to be very clean.

Maybe Kevin has some good ideas where to look next?
