I had a similar problem in my 90 735il. I had to remove the button and clean the insides very well. If you're up to this sort of thing, watch out for the small springs and pay attention to the orientation of things. I haven't had a problem since. I think the previous owner had spilled coffee in the switch. Good Luck.

What do I do. I've owned this car for 2 years and the S,E,M button for the tranny never worked. When I put the car in 1st gear and I hit the M button the dash just blinks and goes back to E? How do you fix such a problem? My tranny is fine, the car is smooth but I wish this option worked. All info is appreciated.
