Does the fluid look and smeel burnt? If so, you are probably correct in that its time to rebuild the transmission. Depending on where you are and how lucky you get, I have heard everything from $1000 - $5000 to rebuild a trans. $2000 installed seems to be a price I can find in several shops that specialize in rebuilding BMW parts. Call and shop around, the $$$ you savem may be your own!, or better yet, post a question to ask the board members in your area to make recommendations.
One cheap fix to try first is to power flush the tans and refill with fresh fluid (not enough just to drain it). See if that makes your troubles go away, if not, you are likely in for a rebuild.
Good Luck!

I talked to some friends, and it seems that I might be in luck... One friend said that the rubbing I heard may be the clutch packs and that they are made to sacrifice themselves to wear so you won't have to replace the whole tranny [they are cheaper to replace]... do any of you guys have any thoughts on this? could I be saved?
