I have found that it is easiest to remove the steering link from the bottom of the strut and use a two jaw puller. You'll need a fairly stout one since a lot of pressure is required. The arms on my Craftsman puller were able to grab the machined flat around the thrust arm ball joint and hang on sufficiently to pop the thing loose. No heating, no pounding.
