MJ P,

Hmm, you don't mention how you know the rear diff is shot. What are the symptoms? if you are just leaking lube then for pete's sake just replace the seal! The only reason to replace the differential is if you have a cracked case or maybe with broken or extraordinarily worn gears (but even then the gear set can be replaced). Sometimes bolts on the rear carrier can work loose and or even break which can give you a clunking noise.

But before you pronounce you rear dear cause of a bad seal, your wallet implores you to be sure you need it!

That being said, I have not heard of a source for rebuilt units. (This is NOT a common failure in these cars.. although a 5 speed may put more stress on the rear..). Perhaps you would need to find a used differential for the cheapest fix.

Good Luck

Well my 735i 5spd with 231,000 miles is in need of a driveshaft and rear transfer case . Perhaps the rear case seals are shot bit I guess the best bet will be to toss the differential....any idea on cost ???
