You did not indicate where the smell was coming from but if it's from under the hood...many times the hoses that supply (petrol) to the fuel rail have begun to deteriorate and leak. Next time you smell it, open hood and look at rear of engine (nearer to windshield) and see if you can smell or see if the hoses supplying the fuel rail are leaking. The fuel system is under pressure and when you turn the engine off...the (petrol) probably stops leaking.

Also check in the archives (type in "smell of gas" or "smell gas) on this board and the e38 board and read through the old post for some ideas and for posts that are similar to yours.

hi folks
does anyone out there know why my 1992 BMW 735se smells strongly of petrol sometimes when it is started when engine is cold. also the lettering on my automatic gearbox does not
illuminate is it supposed to.
