The oil pressure idiot light switch is where you say, just below the coolant tank on the back of the head. The electrical connector is the type with the wire bail which you just pinch to release & pull the connector off.

I can't explain the oil consumption unless it was a large leak. These engines are normally very tight for not passing oil past the rings & valve guides. I have seen leaky oil pressure switches on other German cars so maybe that was it(?)
