"Power Protection Relay" - what does it do? (archive)

My car was draining the battery over about 24hours. I finally found a problem with the HVAC control ECU ('IHKA' unit). However, even with the IHKA disconnected, I have a current drain of about 0.3A
I subsequently discovered that the 'power protection relay' (fitted at the side of the rear power distribution panel) is permanently active (slightly warm all the time). What does this relay do? It appears to connect only to the General Module.
