Neal:

I recently upgraded/changed my stereo system in my 1990 735 il. However, since my speakers were still in working condition, I did not change them.

The answer to your question depends what you want to do with the system. You can find tons of speakers from speakercity.com (once you know the size and power handling of the spk). I would suggest MB Quartz. They are really good speakers. One of my friend installed them on his 1990 535, and it sound really good.

If you would like to know what I did I mine, read the following:

I kept all the speakers in the car intact. They were still in good shape. Since I was getting any good bass from the system, I decided to add a subwoofer box. I first changed the head unit (now DEH-P8250, and it's wicked). Since I had to run the RCA link from the deck to the amplifier for the sub in the trunk, I decided to add another amp for the rear and front speakers. This way I was running RCA cables for both the sub-woofer amp, and the front and rear spk. amp. It took about 1 hour. But you have to be careful with the carpet holders. They are, I believe, plastic. Once this was done, I pull the rear seat out, and added power wires straight from the battery to the trunk where the sub-woofer box. You also have to locate the custom amp. In my car, it's on the driver side (US cars) in the trunk. You will have to remove the carpet covers, et voila the 20 watts (?) custom amp. Once you have the amp. wired you need to figure out the output wires from the custom amp (not difficult). If you need the reast info e-mail me. Otherwise this will get really long.

Result: High-fidelity sound in my sparkling red wine 1990 735 il BMW, Sir! I did not want it to sound loud as those guys in their Mustangs at the stop light. But I wanted high quality sound at low volume level. Now I can play my Enigma CD over and over.

Good luck with the speaker search Neal.
