I think both Philly Bob and Larry have valid points. I bought my 735i off ebay and looking back on it I'm glad I did, with reservations. The car was in very good condition cosmeticaly overall except that the owner had no idea what had been done, or not done, mechanically to it. He bought it from the City of Ft Lauderdale (God knows where they got it). Not one scrap of maintenance info was provided.
In my favor was the price. I figured if it needed
work I could justify it because the purchase price was fairly low. Well, I have put about $2500 in it including $1200 for a head gasket job. On balance, if I had to do it again I would look for a car with more information about its past
The moral of the story is: ask as many questions as possible of the seller and get the repair records, if available. The more you know, obviously, the better prepared you are to get the best deal possible. E32's tend to have had more than one owner, if not several, in their past so clearly the buyer won't know everything about how it was treated.
Good luck and good hunting!

Regards,
Neal
