Hi Stuart

Finally and long last got it nailed.

Bad contact in the switch on the stalk, duh.

Ever since I've had the car (for a couple of years now) the intensive screen wash has never functioned. That's mode where you press the stalk end in towards the steering wheel and it then pumps neat screen wash on the screen, followed by normal screen wash and a good swish around the wipers.

Had checked both pumps (OK), but discovered with the intensive pump disconnected it would wash 'n' wipe. Albiet without the dash of fluid from the intensive bottle that sits piggy backed on the main washer bottle.

Discounted the switch as a problem since this (limited) mode of operation worked on command from the switch.
Besides I couldn't quite figure how to get inside it.

But advice from the BMW specialists (who do the major stuff on my car) was that in their experience the switch would be the problem.

OK, opened it up, (catch is the reverse side), extracted the plastic slider (and spring), popped the contact off (watch it as it travels quite far). Wonderfully clean apart from the small dirty patch on both contact faces. Cleaned and re assembled (more difficult than taking apart). Hit the switch and lo it worketh !

Ah one well earned beer coming up ! (oh yes I suppose I'd better buy Dave the BMW mechanic one too).
