Likely need to use the "emergency unlock" procedure. Go to the passenger door, turn the key to unlock, raise the handle and then turn further (about 110 deg.) to manually override the mechanism. You will need to re-synch things afterwards but that is also a simple thing.

Uh Oh.....
My 89 735i will not unlock with the key. Dead battery perhaps, but how do I get into the darned thing to check the battery? Of course the car is the last one in the driveway, so nobody leaves till it moves....
