Very common problem and easy to fix. Run a can of BG 44K through a gas tank full or two. Your problem is caused by dirty fuel injectors that do not close properly; thereby, letting fuel leak into the cylinders. The leaking injector(s) cause a rich condition that a warm engine does not like. Hence the black (fuel) smoke on startup. No, the M70 engine does NOT use a cold start valve. BG products are professional grade additives which are not available retail. Ask around at service shops. Some car dealer service department will stock and sell the product.

Hello All. When starting cold first thing in the morning, it starts off fine with no problems. However, when I start the car in the afternoon or after a short trip when the engine is fairly warm, it will fire off then die. There is a lot of black soot coming out of the tail pipe -- running too rich? Someone told me that it may be a cold start injector injecting when it doesn't need to be and making the mix too rich. There is a light to moderate raw fuel smell just after startup. Any ideas?
