Replaced aux water pump with brass valve (archive)

The plastic nipple leading to my heater valves broke off last week (see linked message). I ordered a new one but when I removed it and the auxillary water pump I found that the pump had long been broken. It is rusted inside out, fortunately the electrical connections are open, not shorted. Anyway, to save $110 on a new motor I opted to replace it with a brass water valve from a hardware store. With two 3/4" brass fittings and removal of a few inches of rubber from the hose connecting to the engine block (where hot water comes in) I now fitted the brass valve in the space below and behind the +12V jumper block.

The valve is fully opened in four turns. I opened one turn (still experimenting) so hot water can still enter the heater core but hopefully the restriction at the valve can reduce pressure inside the core to lengthen its service life.

Before the hose bursted I planned to follow Grant Bower's
rebuild of the heater valve plungers but the old plastic on the valve body just wouldn't hold up any longer. With the new valve body the heater problem inside the cabin is also fixed.
