I did not notice any symptoms at all prior to failing leak down test in my 1995 540iA.
: I have a 1994 530ia, with 67,000 miles on it and the original Nikasil block. My 6 year/100,000 mile extended engine warranty will expire in 8/99, since my date in service is listed as 8/93. For those of you who have had the short block replacement, I was wondering what the symptoms of your "bad" engine were before the replacement. I know that the most commmon one is rough idling. Mine idles somewhat rough only when it is cold. However, my oil seems to get dirty fairly quickly (it is filthy looking 1500 miles after an oil/filter change), compared with my other vehicles (Volvo 240 and Toyota truck). To me, this indicates possible excessive compression ring blow-by, although the engine does not burn any oil. As I am planning to take my car in this summer for the free leakdown test (before the warranty runs out), any comments on symptoms would be appreciated. This should also serve as a wakeup call to all 1993 and 1994 V8 owners - check with your dealer as to your car's date-in-service, as the extended warranty is good for only 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first!!
