I've had the same thought about swapping my automatic tranny for a stick shift. My other BMW is a 535i (w/5spd) and I really miss the fun of driving while I drive my Touring.

Last October, I purchased a '92 525iT with 55K miles for $15,200. The car is in excellent shape and I really couldn't walk away from it.

After driving over 11,000 miles since then, here are a few thoughts...

The engine runs very quietly and smoothly. I switched to Mobil I and have changed it every 3500 miles.

The stock suspension is a bit soft. I will probably install Bilstein HD's later this year. The car is very comfortable on long rides (500+ nonstop). I would enjoy an M coupe but since I am 6'3" & 285#, the Touring works well. The dual roof provides great ventilation and opening the rear section fully, allows my son to shoot photos when we make a stop.

Putting the tranny in Sport mode helps a bit when driving on a twisty Ozark highway. The lack of power shows when accelerating out of a tight hairpin. I know that a Touring is not a sportscar but I forget once in a while.

I really use the extra room when I travel but the wind noise of the open roof is painful over 70mph. The car is very smooth at 95+ out on the open road (West Texas). Only problem at that speed is of the black & white variety.

My overall gas mileage is approx 22MPG.
