Here's what we used to do when I detailed cars.
1-use carpet shampoo. foams less
2-scrub gently and EVENLY. Clean isn't as important as an 'even shine'.
3-you can lift dirt with a wet dry vac. Get wet with the shampoo, gently scrub, vac dry. Don't use your 5HP Craftsman shopvac at full power! It can stretch the liner when it's wet. Also, be sure your attachment end is clean too!
4 - grease and tough stains can often be lifted with a solvent like paint thinner. spray on. shampoo, scrub and vac to get the dirt and solvent out.
cigarette smoke is tough, especially on a cloth headliner. use lots of water if you can. see warning below.
always test a small spot to see how the process works. each car is a bit different so it's always good to be cautious at first. but, as i learned, with a little patience and inguinuity, just about anything can come clean!

: What would be the best thing to use on a headliner?
: Soap and Water? I am afraid that I might discolor it.
