I looked into a tranny swap a while back on my
'95 530ia, and it was towards $10,000 w/parts and labor, if I remember correctly. Folks I talked to (BMW dealers and indies) all said it would not be an easy job, and said if I wanted a manual, go buy one. If you want some of the feel of a manual, you could consider adding a Transwitch to the car - provides you w/shifting capability like the Steptronic on the newer BMWs. Requires replacing the auto trans control chip and some wiring, and would probably void any warranty on tranny stuff if you had one.

For info on issues related to the 530iT V8 engine, go to http://home.pacbell.net/dbwhite/530i-Home.htm and read the V8 and sulfur information.

IMHO, the V8 in the 530i and 530iT is vey nice - smooth and powerful. I don't think the 2.5 liter straight six in the 525T is really up to the job of hauling the Touring around. I know several 530i Touring owners, and they all seem very happy with and loyal to their cars.

: I've been looking at the E34 5xxiT (52iT and 530iT) as a replacement for my current car. One issue that I have with the North American imports is that they only came with an automatic transmission.

: Has anyone on this list performed a transmission swap, replacing the automatic with a 5-speed? If you've done this, could you please send me a not, describing the level of complexity and cost associated with it? I would probably have the work done by a mechanic, but I'd like to know what it would take to get the work done.

: On another note, for owners of the E34 Touring, what are your opinions of the car?

: Thanks,

: Ron Buchalski
