Between the E34 535i and 525i, get the 535i. Why? Torque. The E34 535i came with 208 hp and about 223 ft-lb torque versus the 525 190 hp and about 170 ft-lb torque. That 50 ft-lb of torque is a huge difference. I've driven both and off the line, the 525i can't touch a 535i. Please note that new the automatic was supposedly a no cost option for the 535i, so most people chose the auto. Therefore, the 5 speed manuals are rare. I have never seen a published time for the 525i, but the 2/89 Road and Track tested a 5 speed manual, 535i and time its 0-60 at 7.7 sec. and the 1/4 mile at 15.9 sec. As you can guess I have a 535i 5 speed stick and love it. Of course, if you really want power, get the M5 or a 540i 6 speed. Bruce
