: I'm asking these questions from the perspective of a possible future purchase. The only BMWs I have driven (short test rides) are a stock 1989 525ia (slow and floaty) and a slightly tweaked 1988 M3 (nice). I found a web site somewhere that said 535i with 5 speed did 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds. How does that compare to the 1991+ 525i? How about the 1989-1990 525i? I drive a 9 year old Integra now (no vtec) and I am _almost_ content with its acceleration, so I don't need a rocket-ship or anything. Of course there is more than just 0-60, but I'm just curious about that for now. Thanks.
Art,
Bruce is right. I've got a 525i, and its acceleration is good, but not great. It's a heavy car. Don't hesitate to get it sharked (Jim C perf chip)if you buy the 525, it makes a big difference in the feel and drive of the car, not much in 1/4 mile times (still around 9-10 seconds i think). They're both GREAT cars once up to speed, but the 525 needs a little more room to get there. I looked for a 535 for MANY months, but i couldn't find the "right" one. I finally threw in the "torque towel" and bought my 525i...it's been great. Happy hunting!
