Sounds like a manula box. Could this be clutch drag - the clutch not dis-engaging fully? In my non-BMW experience this was sometimes due to dirty splines on the gearbox input shaft. Also worth checking the clutch release for full travel - is there air in the hydraulics etc..

: So I just bought this 1990 525i and have a few questions. When the car is cold, getting it into reverse or 1st takes some real elbow grease. Any thoughts as to why and what can be done to ease the shifting some? Also, the interior lights don't illuminate when the car door is open. Any tips much appreciated. thx, Mark
