I guess a lot of us have thought about this. Here is a link from a guy who converted a 635CSi - http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/modify.html

When planning for the parts, don't forget a 530i manual flywheel (dealer?) as well as the gearbox, drive shaft, pedal box, cross member etc. Do you find many E34 530i in wreckers in the US? My main concern was sourcing a manual box that would bolt up to the engine flange - does a 535i box fit?

: : I looked into a tranny swap a while back on my
: : '95 530ia, and it was towards $10,000 w/parts and labor, if I remember correctly. Folks I talked to (BMW dealers and indies) all said it would not be an easy job, and said if I wanted a manual, go buy one.

: $10,000???!!! I was thinking along the lines of getting as many of the needed parts as possible from a wrecked 530i. So, transmission and related parts, pedal assembly, shifter, console. I would buy new hydraulic parts and new clutch-related parts. I can't imagine the cost approaching $10,000, but I haven't checked around.

: :If you want some of the feel of a manual, you could consider adding a Transwitch to the car - provides you w/shifting capability like the Steptronic on the newer BMWs. Requires replacing the auto trans control chip and some wiring, and would probably void any warranty on tranny stuff if you had one.

: : IMHO, the V8 in the 530i and 530iT is vey nice - smooth and powerful. I don't think the 2.5 liter straight six in the 525T is really up to the job of hauling the Touring around. I know several 530i Touring owners, and they all seem very happy with and loyal to their cars.

: I've driven the 530i w/5-speed and was impressed with the car. I haven't driven a 530ia yet. Maybe I'll check that out. Thanks!
