Juddering Clutch (archive)

Hi folks,

For the second time in the year I've owned this car ('91 535i), it's begun acting up in stop and go conditions.

Trying to get rolling in first gear, engaging the clutch produces fairly severe juddering, making the entire car shake. Taking the revs up over 2000 helps a little but it sure feels like it wants to come apart.

After resuming normal, smooth traffic conditions, the problem goes away by itself. I don't do much stop and go so I can't determine how frequently this would occur.

Any thoughts/troubleshooting tips would be most welcome. Car has 70k miles and otherwise drives perfectly. No odd clutch behavior under other conditions.

Thanks much,
