The new altn. is bad. One or more of the diodes have gone bad. It's the positive ones if I remember right. Replace the part, make sure that your battery is still good as you don't want to fry the new altn. once you install it. Having a dead battery in a car with a new altn. trying to charge it up is a easy way to overheat that new altn.
