The 530/540 is a great car. Take a look at the link below to get a good bit of insight on the 530 & 540 and the problems some of these cars have with sulpher in gas resulting in excessive cylinder wall wear.

You also might want to search the archives of this board for M60 (the V8 engine used), sulpher and maybe "leakdown" which is the test used to find the wear.

'95 540iA (with new Alusil block)

: I absolutely love the the 540i, but I've heard rumors about poor engine wear. Is this true? I had an E28 (1983 533i) with 225,000 mi. until someone wrecked it last week and I'm looking for a 1989-1994 540. Are any particular years better than others, and is poor engine life really an issue? Any information would be helpful.
