: I saw a statement somewhere in a car ad on the internet
: that there were only 135 1995 540i 5speeds made (or
: perhaps he meant imported into this country). I know
: they are hard, but not impossible to find. Does anyone know how many there are? Or how I could find out?

You have some facts messed up. That is, unless you are talking about the 5 speed automatic. The regular 540i was available in both auto and SIX speed manual, and lots of both were built, though I haven't ever seen the production numbers.
Now, the 540i SPORT is another story, and maybe that is what you are talking about. There were approximately 200 of these built, and somewhere arount 135 were six speeds, the rest autos. This car was basically a M5 with the V-8 engine, built very late in the '95 production year. BTW, there was NO 1996 five series car, as the new E39 body came out in Spring of '96 as a '97 model.
