I have recently purchased a 1989 535I manual with a milage of about 218 000 kms. When the car is cold there is absolutely no noise, but when the car has been driven a bit and switched off, it makes the noise that you have described. If the car is switched on it will make the noise as well. Before I took delivery of the car, I insisted that the noise be rectified. The previous owner also experinced this noise and had the gearbox dropped and the clutch and pressure plate replaced by one of the leading BMW machs in South Africa (ROB GREEN CONVERSIONS). The has had most of its services done by ROB GREEN himself. The car was taken back to rob green who dropped the box again to look for anything loose or broken and confirmed that it is a natural symptom of the 535Im. naturally i thought it was a load of rubbish, and convinced the dealer to give me a better price on the car and took it to my mach who also confirmed that it is a natural occurance. I then consulted with many other BMW specialists who also confirmed the above. I too press in the clutch before starting and switching this absolutely powerful driving machine off.
