I just replaced the rear shocks on my '90 535i at 110K miles of mostly New England driving (winter, too). The spring pads (upper and lower)and the upper mount (the only "bushing") were in perfect condition. The bump stops and dust skirts were in good condition, too. Based on that, there's no need for the "installation kit". Don't forget the $1 paper gaskets that go at the very top, though. They seem trivial, but I think they help isolate noise and keep the upper support from corroding to the body.
