Actually, I was just working on my '89 535i last knight for the same reasons. I had just had front end steering work done and I still felt that there was play left in the wheel. So, I put the car up on jacks in preparation to do the steering box adjustment, and..... much to my amazement, there was absolutely no play there.

My conclusion is that with stock tires (tyres), there is enough sidewall give to make the steering seem more vauge than it is. If you really want to see, put it up on jacks, and while you move one of the wheels back and forth, observe the steering wheel through the windshield. That will give you an idea of play.
